owl reading a book

This past Tuesday UPark hosted a math presentation at the monthly CSC meeting. We want to thank the family members who were able to join the meeting along with our CSC members. Teachers Allie McMahon and Sarah Sawyer did a wonderful job of explaining the progression of math learning from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The goal of Tuesday's session was to help deepen family understanding of how the learning in each grade level connects to future learning in math.

Illustrative Math (IM), our new math curriculum, is based on a problem-based, student-centered philosophy where learners "do" math to understand concepts deeply, rather than just memorizing procedures. Students learn by engaging with tasks, exploring concepts and solving problems. Teachers act as facilitators who orchestrate discussions, ask probing questions and encourage mathematical discourse. This is very much aligned with the work we have been doing around Kagan cooperative learning for the last few years. We want students to do the math and talk about the math in order to deeply understand the concepts.

We would love for families to take a look at the meeting video linked above and check out this great information about math at UPark!

Thank you,
