CSC Minutes - March 6, 2008

In attendance: Dennis Thompson, principal; Terri Allsup, PTA president; Barbara Lamana, school social worker; Azita Shakibafar, staff representative; Anita Murano, Angela Dire, Jessica Rogers, Judy Manchak, faculty representatives; Ted Pinkowitz, chairperson; Kelly Scarborough, Nikki Maloney, parent representatives; Jody Power, community representative.

Minutes. The minutes from the February 7 and 14 meetings were amended as follows: Ms. Murano was in attendance at both meetings.

Counseling service for the 08/09 School Year. Ms. Lamana, University Park’s social worker, informed the committee that the school’s contract counseling services are in jeopardy. Currently, a private counselor works at University Park two days a week, seeing about 25 students. The counselor’s salary is paid for, in part, with $2,200 in grant money administered by the district. For the upcoming school year, the district intends to spend the grant money on a different program. University Park is one of about 16 schools that could lose the contract counseling services because of the change.

Ms. Lamana told committee members that it will be difficult if not impossible for her to assume the caseload of the counselor. She has already assumed many of the duties of the school psychologist, a position which the district eliminated beginning this school year.

Committee members unanimously agreed to write a letter protesting the district’s decision to take away the funding and encouraging other Collaborative School Committees to do the same. The CSC will also:

  • Find out specifically what other DPS schools are affected by the decision,
  • Try to contact representatives from those schools’ CSCs,
  • Organize a meeting with CSC representatives from the affectedschools and the district administrator in charge of managing the grant that currently pays for the contract counseling services.

Band Program for 2008-09: Enrollment in the instrumental music program is projected to be about 50 children next school year. The services will continue to be provided on a contract basis for enrichment. There will be a slight tuition increase from $30 to $35 monthly, but tuition will remain the same for students who pay in advance by semester. Even with the tuition increase, the program may need about $4000 in extra support, perhaps from a separate PTA grant. Mrs. Scarborough suggested the tuition increase should be higher – perhaps $10 a month more than the proposed $35. Mrs. Allsup suggested the school charge a small fee for renting instruments to cover the cost of any lost or stolen instruments.

Lunch Bunch: Committee members unanimously agreed to continue this program for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds enrolled in preschool or half-day kindergarten. However, Mr. Thompson stated that several administrative changes need to be made to Lunch Bunch. The school has had difficulty finding employees to supervise the children. Finding an efficient method for billing families has also been a problem. Kaleidoscope, the contractor which runs the school’s before- and after-school day care, has been approached to run Lunch Bunch but has not yet responded. Committee members decided to wait for an answer from Kaleidoscope before making any further decisions.

Principal Selection Process Update: Mr. Thompson told the CSC that candidates for principal of University Park have had their “learning walks” with Chief Education Officer Jaime Aquino. They now must interview with Superintendent Michael Bennett. Assistant Superintendent John Simmons thanked members of the Principal Selection Committee for their work and told them to “trust the process,” Mr. Thompson stated.

Budget and Staffing Update: University Park has hired a half-time third grade teacher from within the building. Half-day kindergarten teacher Sarah Smith will teach half a day of kindergarten and half a day of third grade next year. Mr. Thompson has also readjusted hours for paraprofessionals. The reading paraprofessional will work 4 instead of 7.5 hours daily and the general paraprofessional will work 25 instead of 26 hours each day. The school is in the process of hiring a half-time gifted and talented teacher. It may be possible for the new principal to participate in the interview process, Mr. Thompson said. Next years enrollment at University Park is projected at 438 students.

Highly Gifted and Talented Program: The school recently tested students nominated for this program. Of 32 University Park children tested, 15 students qualified for services. Mr. Thompson suggested that at its next meeting the CSC may want to discuss programming for HGT students, including whether University Park should explore or pursue becoming a district HGT magnet school.

Nutrition Policy: Mrs. Scarborough suggested that the CSC review the school’s “fruit and vegetables only” nutrition policy and make adjustments. She stated that several parents have complained to her of the policy’s strictness.

The next meeting of the CSC is scheduled for April 3, 2008 in the school library.
