APPLE FUN RUN:
Email your Aunt in Kalamazoo, or the Grandfather who lives right around the corner from you…..The Apple Fun Run is a great community event! While the kids and parents can enjoy a fun day with their friends, the pledges our students get is a simple but crucial way to fundraise for our school. Most neighbors are willing to sponsor your child - give it a try. This is a fun morning for the whole family (everyone walks or runs) – so bring any older or younger siblings too. We are also encouraging any family in the neighborhood that may not have kids at our school to join this run held Saturday November 7th. So, see if that Great Aunt in Kalamazoo will sponsor your child and come have some fun!

GROCERY CARDS ARE HOT:
Once again our community of parents has stepped up and we had several new families begin to regularly purchase grocery cards in October. Our total profit from grocery cards in October was $1,000.70. We have a goal of $12,000 by the end of the school year. We are looking for 15 more families to regularly purchase these cards. Five percent of what you buy goes directly to our school. We need you! Remember a parent is on the playground every day with a “Grocery Cards” button on. Thank you to those who are participating.

ORANGES!

Let's show our generous donor that we can do it!

THE BOOK SHELF is there for anyone to take books and use them in their home. Please go through your child’s books and bring in any that you are ready to give away. Simply place them on THE BOOK SHELF. It is self-maintained, meaning – if it is a mess, please tidy up. If you notice it is low on books – please tell the front office to announce that we need more books in the bulletin.

WHOLE GRAINS FOR GROWING BRAINS FUNDRAISER:
Please join the Great Harvest Bread Co. of Denver (owned by DPS parents) and the Denver Public Schools’ Educational Outreach Program for their 4th annual Whole Grains for Growing Brains fundraiser. On Saturday, October 17th, the Great Harvest Bread Co. located in the Belcaro Center at 765 South Colorado Boulevard will donate 100% of our sales to the DPS Educational Outreach Program to support their efforts to support homeless students in our school system. This is not a donation of profit, nor is it a donation of a percentage of sales. Every cent taken in on this special day will go directly to this important program that helps our community’s children face their many challenges with food, clothing, transportation, and other necessities so many of us take for granted. Customers on October 17th will also have the opportunity to buy bread and donate it back to this cause. Donated bread will be distributed to families in Denver homeless shelters. Scheduling conflicts will prevent us from including students in the bread making process this year, but the cause is still just as important and the bread will still taste just as good. Please help us spread the word about Whole Grains for Growing Brains 2009, and please consider shopping at our bakery from 6:00am to 6:30pm on this day for the children in our school district that need us the most. We will be selling seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in Brighton, CO as well as vegetables from our own school garden immediately after school near the northeastern corner of the playground until 5pm. Plan on buying your family’s produce for the week from the University Park Youth Farmer’s Market. Please invite members of the community, family and friends to do the same and raise more money for our school. Cash and checks will be accepted. You can also order bulk produce by the bushel or ½ bushel, which will be delivered to you the following week. Organic Gala apples from Ela Farms in Brighton will be delivered on Saturday. Please place your order at the market if you are interested in bulk ordering.

HELP US REACH OUR SEPTEMBER GOAL!
Thank you to all of you who have already donated to PTA this September through the Apple Committee, a total of $1690! The PTA Apple fundraising goal, if averaged out, is $8000 per month. Wouldn’t it be a great month to surpass our goal? After all, we don’t have to look forward to many months of big tuition payments for high quality education. Think about making a "tuition" payment this month to keep the pattern of extra support for our children and their classmates. They deserve the best. And don’t forget. Any family who donates to PTA Apple by September 30th will have a chance to win a lunch with the principal, or dinner for 4 at the Pioneer Restaurant. PTA Apple checks can be dropped of at the office or mailed.

As always, the best way to contact me is through email at molly@myenrichment.com so I will have the ability to respond after hours. Molly

THE BOOK SHELF:
By the front office sits a delightfully painted book shelf that is used for books. We are asking that parents bring in gently used books to donate to THE BOOK SHELF. These books can be either parenting books or books children would enjoy. They can be any level from baby books to 5th grade novels.

COMMUNITY BOARD AND MAGAZINE RACK:
Offers information that is available to parents of items, but not included with the Thursday Communication folder. The Community Board is for advertising or information about the community. The Magazine Rack is located outside the office with flyers that were not put in the Thursday folder.

Plan on buying your family’s produce for the week from the University Park Youth Farmer’s Market. Please invite members of the community, family, and friends to do the same and raise more money for our school. Cash and checks will be accepted. You can also order bulk produce by the bushel or ½ bushel, which will be delivered to you the following week. Organic Gala apples from Ela Farms in Brighton will be delivered on Saturday. Please place your order at the market if you are interested in bulk ordering. Thanks for participating!

ARE YOU A NEW FAMILY TO UNIVERSITY PARK?
The PTA welcomes you and would like you to know that we sell grocery cards to raise money for the school. More than a third of our families participate. Here is how it works: you purchase a grocery gift card to King Soopers, Safeway or Sunflower market and you get the full value of the cards. UPark receives 5% of what you purchase. Cards can be purchased on the playground from Katie Mukulich, Vanessa Tran, Andrea Bowser, Amy Homburger, Terri Allsup, or in the front office. The cards can be delivered to you, if you do not come to school with your child each day. For delivery, call Terri Allsup at 303-550-0831.

WIN A FREE LUNCH or DINNER:
Win a Free Lunch with our principal, Dana Williams, or Dinner for 4 at the Pioneer Restaurant! All September donors will have a chance! PTA has received several donations already, totaling $1,220. Any size donation to PTA Apple is very welcome – and tax deductible. As we learned at Back-to-School Night, it takes a combined effort of fundraising, volunteers, and family support to provide better opportunities and education for our UPark students. A fundraising target of $300 per child (roughly $1/day) will go great lengths in helping provide great quality!! Drop your PTA Apple checks of any size at the office or in the mail. Lunch and dinner winners will be selected in a random drawing at the end of September of all the families that have donated.

TENNIS FOR KIDS DAY:
FREE day for ALL students to learn and play tennis at the Gates Tennis Center, USTA's 2008 National Public Facility of the Year. This event is on Saturday, September 12 from 8:30-11:30am. The whole facility, including all 20 courts, will be dedicated to introducing kids to tennis and providing fun on-court and off-court activities, as well as great prizes. Juniors of all ages are welcome. The event kicks-off the 2009 Colorado State Open, similar to how Arthur Ashe Kids Day launches the US Open. Kids attending "Tennis for Kids" Day will also receive tickets to the 2009 Colorado State Open. For more information please see the "Tennis for Kids" Day Flyer: www.gatestenniscenter.info/tennis4kids.pdf. For more information about the Colorado State Open: www.gatestenniscenter.info. In addition to our "Tennis for Kids" Day connected with the Colorado State Open and other programming specifically directed to juniors, the Gates Tennis Center offers a sliding-scale scholarship program, called "Tennis for Kids," and funded by donations from local businesses, grants and many of our generous and committed tennis players. The purpose of our program is to provide financial assistance and to enable motivated juniors to learn and play the lifetime sport of tennis. Through tennis, fundamental life attributes can be taught such as determination, work ethics, responsibility, integrity, commitment and self-confidence. Gates is committed to using tennis as a means to help instill these qualities in juniors, who require financial support, have the desire to improve, show talent for the sport, and show overall good sportsmanship and maintain a positive attitude. CLOTHES GETTING TOO SMALL?
Donate them through our school and we benefit—You may have noticed the red collection box in our school parking lot. Red Apple Recycling collects used clothing and shoes (in any condition) and all profits are given to schools for greening, recycling and wellness programs. UPark received a grant from Red Apple to help buy recycled copy paper next year and to put in a filtered water dispenser in the lunchroom. Please tell your neighbors and friends to recycle their used clothing in our collection bin. Red Apple Recycling mentioned that nothing is too used or too old to be recycled. All of the benefit stays here in Colorado.

COLORADO PARENT MAGAZINE:
For September is available; we have a few copies in the office or you can go to their website; colorado.parenthood.com. Lots of good parenting information is available in this magazine/website!

REMINDERS FROM THE STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK:

  • BICYCLES, SCOOTERS, ROLLER BLADES, SKATES AND SKATEBOARDS:
Bicycles and scooters may be ridden to and from school. Bicycles are to be locked in the bike rack and scooters are to be kept in the coat rack area in the hallway. They are not to be moved during the school day. Students are required to walk their bicycle or scooter on school grounds. Students are encouraged to wear a helmet if they ride a bike or scooter to school. Roller Blades, skates, skate shoes, and skateboards are not permitted on school grounds at any time!

  • LEAVING CAMPUS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY:
Students must be signed out from the office during the school day. Anyone who is picking up a child during the school day must first come to the office and sign the student out. The student will then be called to the office to leave. If the individual needs to go to a room or outside to get a student, a release form will be sent with them from the office which verifies that the student has first been checked out at the office. In no case will a student be allowed to leave with anyone but a custodial parent/guardian unless the office has been provided with a note giving permission signed by the legal parent/guardian. Students cannot leave school grounds during the day without permission from the office.

  • MONEY AND ARTICLES FROM HOME:
Students are discouraged from bringing money or valuable items to school as the school assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or destroyed items. Money may be left with the teacher or office personnel for safekeeping. Any money sent to school is safest when in the form of a check placed inside an envelope with the student’s first and last name written on it. Students like to bring items from home for show and tell. However, items of value that may get lost or damaged should be brought to school by a parent and taken home after they have been shown.

  • DRESS CODE:
Appropriate dress is required. Caps are not allowed in the building except for special designated days. Please dress your children appropriately in regard to the weather. Most days the children are outside for recess, gym and other activities. During inclement weather children need hats, coats, gloves or mittens. Some items of summer clothing are not appropriate for school. Please be sure your student doesn’t come to school wearing the following:
    • Inappropriate footwear, including rubber sole thongs (flip-flops), skate shoes or bedroom slippers
    • Shorts, dresses, skirts or other similar clothing shorter than mid-thigh length
    • Inappropriately sheer, tight, loose, or low-cut clothing that bares or exposes, (For example, the following items are prohibited under this section: garments made of fishnet, mesh, or similar material, and midriffs, halter tops, backless clothing, tube tops, muscle tops, reveling tank tops or sundresses, etc.)

WIN A FREE LUNCH or DINNER:
Win a Free Lunch with our principal, Dana Williams, or Dinner for 4 at the Pioneer Restaurant!—Help us get the year off to a great start by donating to the PTA Apple Campaign this month. Any size donation is very welcome – and tax deductible. Lunch and dinner winners will be selected in a random drawing at the end of September of all the families that have donated.

PTA APPLE CAMPAIGN:
Raises money through direct donations—Help us fund much needed Para-professional help and other PTA goals that public funding just doesn’t cover, but that help keep UPark an extra-special school. Last year, direct donations to Apple added up to $43,939, approximately 42% of the PTA's successful fundraising effort. (Way to go!) All donations are kept strictly confidential. PTA Apple checks can be dropped off at the office or mailed.

We encourage you to park at Observatory Park and volunteer at least one day per month. It takes only 15-20 minutes of your time and helps us continue this great service! Please call the office to volunteer, 303-756-9407.
