From the Principal: April 2009
Dana Williams
Parents are our students’ first teachers and play a vital role in the success of our students. At UPark, we have two key groups that organize parent voices and volunteer efforts.
Collaborative School Committee:
The purpose and scope of the Collaborative School Committee (CSC) is:
- To enhance student achievement and school climate by engaging the school community in collaborative efforts supporting the school and district’s goals.
- To provide strategic direction in support of the school’s mission and vision as stated in the School Improvement Plan (SIP). The SIP, with the school’s program design, should serve as the strategic plan for the school.
- To use Multiple Measures and align resources to support the SIP and the school’s program design.
- To provide guidance, evaluation and approval for the use of the staffing allocations provided by the district as it relates to the SIP, school budget and school program design.
Charged with defining, communicating, and upholding the strategic plan of the school, the CSC plays a vital role in focusing the efforts of all school groups to ensure we work collectively to achieve common goals for our students.
The CSC currently meets the first Wednesday of each month from 4-5:30. Meetings are open to the school community and I encourage you to attend. We also seek 3 parents to serve leadership roles on the CSC for next year – 1 one-year term and 2 two-year terms. If you are interested in one of these elected positions, please e-mail a statement of your interest to be included on the ballot to: allen_deyoung@dpsk12.org by April 1.
PTA:
As the largest volunteer child advocacy association in the nation, the Parent Teacher Association’s (PTA) vision is “Making every child’s potential a reality.” This group provides parents and families with a powerful voice to speak on behalf of every child while providing the best tools for parents to help their children be successful students.
At UPark, the PTA is a dynamic group of parents, teachers and administrators who provide opportunities for community building, enrichment for our students and resources for high quality instruction. Your PTA:
- Organizes community building events to bring students, families and staff together to learn and explore – Fun Run, Art Night, Math Night, Multicultural Night.
- Supports teaching and learning efforts– room parents, volunteers, materials, marketing, wellness, garden, band.
- Supports the school financially through fund raising efforts. The PTA generously supplements our general fund to help us meet the priorities of our community – moderate class sizes, Physical Education and paraprofessional support for teachers.
The power and energy of the PTA grows exponentially with increased participation. The more voices and ideas at the table, the richer the offerings we are able to provide for UPark. If your interest is peaked, join us at our next general meeting April 9th at 6:30 pm in the auditorium.
