PTA - February 2009
PTA MEETING MINUTES, 02-12-09
In Attendance: Cathy Kidder, Terri Allsup, Dana Williams, Amy Homburger, Tami Patzer, Janie Snow, Judy Pottle, Brooke Bolinske
Teacher Update:
Liz Reynolds suggested UPark hat/shirts be available for students at the school store? The idea has been put forth before, we need someone to look into costs, including any funds required up front, and other details.
The Request for PTA Funds for the Classroom form has been passed around to all teachers. The form asks for detail regarding the request, as well as clarifies the process for requesting funds from the PTA.
Judy Pottle volunteered to be a resource for PTA regarding officers, organization, etc.
CSC:
The bulk of the past few CSC meetings has been around budget and proposed scenarios on staffing for next year. More detail covered later in this meeting.
Math Night:
Teachers are required to attend, including the GT teacher who will be staffing the Make and Take station. The night is to include dinner from Angelo’s Pizza, a classroom session by grade to cover curriculum, and a make and take station to create a game to take home. There is no charge to attend. The PTA will serve dinner.
PTA Officers:
Elections will take place in March. We are in the process of defining the role of the President and other officers – what that person does and does not do. We are looking to have chairs/co-chairs in place by the end of this school year for next year. The PTA binder which has information on all events, positions, fundraisers, etc. is in the process of being updated. Suggestion to create individual folders/binders for each event/chair.
Financials:
Cathy Kidder presented for Kathleen Flanagan who was unable to attend. The PTA is projected to start the next school year with about $65-70,000 in the bank account. This is good as it will approximately match what the PTA commits to cover for the staff budget. Grocery Cards are consistently bringing in $800-1000 monthly. The Apple Campaign has raised about $34,000 to date, and we are on target to match last year.
Budget 2009-2010 School Year:
Mrs. Williams was notified of a 2% budget reduction per student (or about $70) for next year, which totals to approximately $27,000. Money will be tight, but doable. The PTA is asked to commit to a grant just over last year’s $60,000. This would allow the school to maintain status quo on staffing and start the school year with 3 full time 3rd grade teachers.
The District anticipates enrollment to be the same while Mrs. Williams expects a slight increase.
Priorities as determined by the school survey, teachers and the CSC are:
- Status quo for teacher numbers (to maintain smaller class size)
- Additional ½ teacher to have 3 third grade classes, ½ day kindergarten
- PE, Para Support
Moved to commit $65,000 to University Park Elementary school to augment school budget: APPROVED
Home Tour:
Three corporate sponsors have returned again for this year: Pam Adams Realty/Appalachian Construction/Peepers Optical. Still looking for businesses to advertise in the home tour brochure and UWhoo: business card size = $250, ¼ page = $450.
Tickets will be $15 in advance (purchased at school, LuLu’s Furniture, gas station), or $20 at the door – discount for seniors and teachers. ALL tickets must be exchanged at the school on tour day for the brochure/home listing. This will drive more traffic to the school (and fundraising taking place), and centralize cash handling.
Still need volunteers and basket items for the raffles. Contact Kathy Tracy or Kathleen Williams.
Marketing:
The Marketing Committee would like to take some of the remaining budget to purchase a trophy case for the front hall. More detail will be collected (size, exact location, contents, cost).
Fundraising:
Home Tour raised $27,000 last year, hope to surpass that number this year. Grocery cards are important and we will continue to publicize how easy this is.
Wellness:
The Fit4Colorado Award was presented to the school on February 13th, along with a check for $1000 for the school. The Niketown Run will take place in May – registration is $20 with $15 of that coming directly back to the school.
Hands UP Volunteer Committee:
It was suggested we consider holding grade level gatherings.
